Dark Chocolate

Dear Chocolate Lovers,

After years of waiting, we finally have the confirmation we’ve been looking for! A recent study carried out at San Diego State University assigned 31 lucky volunteers the enviable task of having to eat a 50g bar of either regular, dark chocolate or white chocolate for 15 days All in the name of science!

Following a battery of blood tests on the participants before and after the study, the researchers found that those who ate dark chocolate had lower blood sugar (glucose) levels, lower levels of LDL (or bad cholesterol) and higher levels of HDL (or good cholesterol). Sadly, white chocolate does not offer the same health benefits as it has no cocoa solids. Dark chocolate on the other hand often contains upwards of 70% cocoa – and therein lies the difference.

Cocoa contains compounds called ‘flavanols’ (sometimes referred to as Flaven-3-ols) which have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This magic stuff is also found in grapes, berries and apples. Anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and cardio-protective effects have also been attributed to this special substance.

In light of all this ground breaking research, there has never been a better reason to enjoy a bowl of our delicious Lizi’s Belgian Chocolate Granola, packed full of wonderful, life-enhancing flavanols. You can get a healthy dose of flavanol from our Apple & Cinnamon flavoured granola as well.

So, my advice? Love life, love chocolate – and especially love your heart!

Lizi xxx
