It’s sugar time again!

Last week’s press have done a good job highlighting the amounts of sugar to be found in various foods. I’m sure you all know where I stand on the subject of sugar. It really is one of those cases when “less is more”, ie trying to reduce the amount of sugar in your tea and your coffee is a good start. In a way I was lucky when I grew up because there were hardly any soft drinks available, very few cereal products, and not a huge amount of fruit, let alone fruit juice. So my chocolate habit is my only major consumption of sugar and the darker the chocolate, the less sugar!

So I thought it would be useful for you if I set out how much sugar is in my granola:

  • Lizi’s Original Granola per 50g serving: (4.6g sugar per 50g serving) = 1 level teaspoon (tsp)
  • Lizi’s Organic Granola per 50g serving: (5.1g sugar per 50g serving) = 1 slightly rounded tsp
  • Lizi’s Belgian Chocolate Granola per 50g serving: (5.6g sugar per 50g serving) = 1 slightly rounded tsp
  • Lizi’s Pink Apple Cinnamon Granola per 50g serving: (9.6g sugar per 50g serving = 1¾ tsp
  • Lizi’s Passionfruit Pistachio Granola per 50g serving: (8.0g sugar per 50g serving) = 1½ tsp
  • Lizi’s Mango Macadamia Granola per 50g serving: (7.1g sugar per 50g serving) = 1¼ tsp
  • Lizi’s Treacle Pecan Granola per 50g serving: (7.4g sugar per 50g serving) = 1¼ tsp

It was a little tricky to equate some of the measurements between 1 tsp and 1¼ tsp; but I’m sure you can see that whichever of these granolas you chose, you can be assured that your serving is low in sugar. So when you are out shopping, and looking at labels, you can tell yourself that every 5g of sugar = 1 tsp. I think teaspoons are easier to visualise than grams!
